1. Graduate Level Posts (Degree Required)
Station Master (SM)
Role: Ensure safe running of trains within station limits. Operates signals and manages station staff. High responsibility post.
Commercial Apprentice (CA)
Role: Supervises commercial activities like goods booking, luggage parcels, and ticket checking. Multi-departmental inspector role.
Goods Train Manager (Goods Guard)
Role: In-charge of a goods train. Works in the brake van, ensures safe transit, exchanges signals. Earns extra “Running Allowance” (Mileage).
Sr. Commercial cum Ticket Clerk
Role: Handles booking offices, goods sheds, and ticket checking duties. Public dealing post with good promotion scope.
Senior Clerk cum Typist
Role: Senior clerical duties in Personnel, Engineering, or Electrical departments. Requires typing proficiency.
Junior Account Assistant cum Typist
Role: Maintains accounts, bills, and salary data in the Accounts Department. Desk job with stable timings.
Senior Time Keeper
Role: Maintains time records of train movements and staff shifts. Works in control rooms or big stations.
Traffic Assistant
Role: Assists in traffic movement, usually in Metro Railway (Kolkata). Requires Psycho Test qualification.
2. Under-Graduate Level Posts (12th Pass)
Commercial cum Ticket Clerk
Role: Issuing tickets at booking windows or checking tickets on platforms/trains. Good entry-level post.
Accounts Clerk cum Typist
Role: Handles basic accounting and data entry in the Accounts Department.
Junior Clerk cum Typist
Role: General clerical work, file management, and dispatch in various departments.
Junior Time Keeper
Role: Assisting Senior Time Keepers in maintaining train/staff records.
Trains Clerk
Role: Maintains records of train coaches, wagons, and their locations in yard offices.
⚙️ Recruitment Process (Step-by-Step)
Stage 1: CBT-1 (Screening)
Common for all posts. It is only qualifying in nature. Marks scored here are NOT added to the final merit, but used to shortlist candidates for CBT-2 (usually 15 times the vacancies).
Stage 2: CBT-2 (Merit Decider)
Separate exams for each Pay Level (Level 2, 3, 5, 6). The questions are tougher than CBT-1. Final selection is primarily based on marks obtained here.
Stage 3: Skill Test (For Specific Posts)
• CBAT (Psycho Test): For Station Master & Traffic Assistant. Requires T-Score of 42 in each battery.
• Typing Test: For Clerks/Time Keepers. Speed: 30 WPM (English) or 25 WPM (Hindi).
Stage 4: DV & Medical
Document Verification followed by a strict Medical Exam at Railway Hospitals.

Medical fitness is the most critical part of Railway recruitment. Failing this leads to rejection even if you top the exam.
⚠️ LASIK Surgery Warning: Candidates who have undergone LASIK or any corrective eye surgery are UNFIT for A-2 and A-3 categories (Station Master, Goods Guard, Trains Clerk).
- A-2 Standard: Distance Vision: 6/9, 6/9 without glasses. (Crucial for SM/Goods Guard).
- A-3 Standard: Distance Vision: 6/9, 6/9 with or without glasses (Power of lenses not to exceed 2D).
- B-2 Standard: Distance Vision: 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (Power not to exceed 4D).
- C-2 Standard: Distance Vision: 6/12, nil with or without glasses. (For Clerical posts).
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Can I apply for both Graduate and Under-Graduate notifications?
A: Yes! If you are a Graduate, you can apply for both notifications separately. You will have to pay the fee for both and appear for exams separately.
Q: Is the 50% marks in 12th mandatory for Under-Graduate posts?
A: Yes, for UR/OBC/EWS candidates, 50% aggregate marks in 12th is mandatory for Under-Graduate posts (Clerk/Time Keeper). However, this rule does not apply to SC/ST/PwBD/Ex-SM candidates OR those who possess higher qualifications (Graduation).
Q: Can I change my RRB Zone after submission?
A: No. Once you submit the online application for a specific RRB (e.g., RRB Kolkata), it cannot be changed. Selection of RRB is final.
Q: What is the T-Score in Psycho Test?
A: For Station Master posts, you must qualify the CBAT (Psycho Test). You need to secure a minimum T-Score of 42 in EACH of the test batteries to qualify.
Q: Is typing test mandatory for all posts?
A: No. Typing test is only for Junior Clerk, Senior Clerk, Junior Accounts Assistant, and Accounts Clerk. It is qualifying in nature (marks not added to merit).
