How is the rank calculated?
Your rank is calculated in real-time based on all candidates who have checked their score using this tool. We provide 5 ranks: Overall Rank, Zonal Rank, Category Rank (OBC/SC/ST/General), Category + Zonal Rank, and Normalized Marks. The more candidates who use this tool, the more accurate the ranks become.
What is normalization in RRB exams?
RRB uses shift-wise percentile-based normalization to ensure fairness across multiple shifts. Your raw marks are converted to a percentile score based on your shift, then normalized to a common base shift. This ensures candidates from easier or harder shifts are compared fairly.
Can I check my rank later without uploading the PDF again?
Yes! Use the "Check Rank" tab and enter your Roll Number. Your stored score and updated live rankings will be shown instantly without needing to upload the PDF again.
Does it work for Hindi and regional language response sheets?

RRB ALP CBT-1 Exam Pattern & Marking Scheme

The RRB ALP (Assistant Loco Pilot) & Technician Grade III recruitment is conducted in two CBT stages. The CBT-1 is the qualifying stage that determines shortlisting for CBT-2. Unlike other RRB exams that have 100 questions, the ALP CBT-1 has only 75 questions carrying 75 marks.

🚂ALP CBT-1 Pattern
75 Questions 75 Max Marks +1 Correct -0.333 Wrong 60 Minutes Duration
📚Subject-wise Breakup
Mathematics — 20 Qs General Intelligence — 25 Qs General Science — 20 Qs General Awareness — 10 Qs

The ALP CBT-1 carries 1/3 negative marking for wrong answers. With 75 questions in 60 minutes, candidates get 48 seconds per question. Since multiple shifts are conducted, RRB applies percentile-based normalization to equalize scores across different question papers.

ALP Selection Process & Eligibility

The ALP recruitment follows a multi-stage selection process. Candidates must hold a 10th pass certificate plus an ITI/diploma in the relevant trade or a degree in engineering to be eligible. The selection stages are as follows.

Stage 1: CBT-1 (Screening)

75 questions, 60 minutes. Covers Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Science, and General Awareness. Used purely for shortlisting — CBT-1 marks do not count in final merit.

Stage 2: CBT-2 (Selection)

Part A (100 marks, common) + Part B (75 marks, trade-specific). Part A covers the same subjects as CBT-1 in greater depth, while Part B tests trade-specific knowledge. Final merit is based on normalized Part A + Part B marks.

Stage 3: CBAT & Document Verification

Candidates shortlisted for ALP post take a Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) assessing cognitive abilities. Those qualifying CBAT proceed to document verification and medical examination. Technician Grade III posts skip CBAT.

How ALP Normalization Works

RRB ALP CBT-1 is conducted across multiple shifts with different question papers. To ensure fair comparison, the Railway Recruitment Boards apply a percentile-based normalization method approved by the Ministry of Railways.

Step 1: Percentile Calculation

Your percentile = (candidates who scored equal to or less than you in your shift ÷ total candidates in your shift) × 100. Calculated to 5 decimal places.

Step 2: Base Shift Selection

The shift with the highest mean marks and at least 70% of average attendance is selected as the base shift. Ties are broken by highest individual score, then highest attendance.

Step 3: Linear Interpolation

Your percentile is mapped to the base shift’s score distribution. Since ALP has 75 marks (not 100), the normalized marks will be on a 75-mark scale. This ensures candidates from easier or harder shifts are compared fairly.

Understanding Your ALP Scorecard

After uploading your ALP Response Sheet PDF, the calculator generates a detailed scorecard. Here is what each metric means for the ALP exam specifically.

Raw Marks (out of 75) — Total score = (correct × 1) − (wrong × 0.333). With 75 questions, maximum raw score is 75 and minimum is −25. A score of 50+ out of 75 is considered strong for ALP.

Percentile Score — Your standing relative to other candidates in the same shift. A percentile of 90 means you scored higher than 90% of candidates who appeared in your particular shift.

Normalized Marks — The equalized score used for CBT-2 shortlisting. Since CBT-1 is only for screening, your normalized marks determine whether you clear the CBT-1 cutoff and proceed to CBT-2.

Predicted Rank — Your estimated position among all ALP candidates who checked marks using this tool. Includes overall, zone-wise, and category-wise breakdowns.

ALP Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ALP CBT-1 exam pattern?
RRB ALP CBT-1 has 75 multiple choice questions worth 75 marks, to be completed in 60 minutes (80 minutes for PwBD). The sections are: Mathematics (20 Qs), General Intelligence & Reasoning (25 Qs), General Science (20 Qs), and General Awareness (10 Qs). Negative marking is 1/3 mark per wrong answer.
Why does ALP have 75 questions instead of 100?
RRB has set the ALP CBT-1 with 75 questions in 60 minutes, giving candidates 48 seconds per question. This is different from NTPC or Group D which have 100 questions. The shorter format is because ALP CBT-1 is purely a screening test — the actual selection happens through CBT-2 which has 175 questions (Part A + Part B).
Do ALP CBT-1 marks count in the final merit?
No. ALP CBT-1 is purely for shortlisting. Candidates who clear the CBT-1 cutoff are called for CBT-2. The final merit is prepared based on CBT-2 normalized marks (Part A + Part B). For the ALP post specifically, CBAT marks are also considered. So CBT-1 performance only matters for qualifying, not for final ranking.
What is the difference between ALP and Technician Grade III?
Both are recruited through the same exam process. Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) drives trains and requires CBAT clearance. Technician Grade III handles maintenance and repair work. The CBT-1 and CBT-2 Part A are common for both. The difference is in CBT-2 Part B (trade-specific questions) and the CBAT requirement (only for ALP). The cutoff for ALP is generally higher than Technician Grade III.
Where can I download my ALP Response Sheet?
Visit the official website of your RRB zone. Log in using your registration number and date of birth. Go to the Answer Key / Response Sheet section and download the PDF. The file contains your questions with color-coded answers — green for correct, red for wrong.
Is the CBAT difficult for ALP selection?
The Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) is mandatory only for ALP post (not Technician Grade III). It tests cognitive and perceptual abilities. Candidates need a minimum qualifying score in each test battery. CBAT marks are added to CBT-2 marks for final ALP merit. Many candidates clear CBT-2 but fail in CBAT, so preparation for aptitude is important.
Is my ALP response sheet data safe?
Yes. Your PDF is processed securely and only answer data is extracted. The original PDF is not stored. Your personal details are used solely for generating your scorecard and ranking within the tool.
Can I check marks for NTPC, Group D, or JE too?
