RRB Technician CBT Exam Pattern & Marking Scheme
The RRB Technician recruitment offers employment as Technician Grade I and Grade III across Indian Railways. Technician positions are critical technical roles focused on maintenance, operations, and troubleshooting of railway equipment and systems. The Technician exam was previously grouped with ALP recruitment but now has a dedicated separate notification and exam structure.
The Technician CBT is conducted across multiple shifts at various examination centers. Negative marking of 1/3 mark (0.333) applies for every wrong answer. A normalized score is calculated to ensure fair comparison across all shifts and examination sessions.
Technician Grade Categories
RRB Technician recruitment covers two distinct grade levels with different responsibilities, qualifications, and salary structures. Both grades require ITI certification or diploma qualification.
Senior technical position handling complex maintenance, troubleshooting, and supervisory duties. Requires ITI with 2+ years experience or equivalent diploma. Higher pay level with better growth prospects. Responsibilities include equipment maintenance, fault diagnosis, and team oversight.
Entry-level technical position focused on routine maintenance and basic operations. Requires ITI or relevant diploma qualification. Lower pay level but excellent foundation for career growth. Typical tasks include preventive maintenance, inspection, and assisting senior technicians.
How Technician Normalization Works
Normalization is a statistical method used when Technician CBT is conducted across multiple shifts or batches. Since different batches have varying difficulty levels, raw marks are equalized using percentile-based normalization to ensure fair comparison.
Your percentile is calculated based on your position among all Technician candidates in your examination shift. If your percentile is 92, you have performed better than 92% of candidates in your shift.
RRB applies the official normalization formula: Normalized Score = (Percentile/100) × Maximum Marks. This ensures that candidates from easier shifts are not advantaged over those in harder shifts.
Your Technician rank is determined by normalized marks across all shifts and zones. This multi-shift normalization ensures that all candidates compete on a level playing field regardless of when or where they appeared for the examination.
Understanding Your Technician Scorecard
Raw Marks (out of 100) — Total score = (correct × 1) − (wrong × 0.333). Maximum 100, minimum −33.3. For Technician CBT, a raw score above 50 is considered reasonable, while scores above 65 are competitive for UR category shortlisting.
Percentile Score — Your standing among all Technician candidates in your shift. Percentile of 80 means you outperformed 80% of Technician candidates who appeared in your examination session.
Normalized Marks — The equalized score after applying percentile-based normalization. Since Technician CBT is conducted across multiple shifts, this ensures fair comparison and determines your shortlist status for document verification and medical examination.
Predicted Rank — Your estimated position among Technician candidates who used this tool. Breakdown by overall, RRB zone, and category helps you gauge your competitive standing across different merit lists for Grade I and Grade III positions.
