RRB NTPC Exam Pattern & Marking Scheme

The RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) CBT-1 is the first stage of the recruitment process for various posts including Station Master, Goods Guard, Commercial Apprentice, Clerk, Traffic Assistant, and other non-technical railway positions across Levels 2 to 6 of the 7th CPC pay matrix.

📝NTPC CBT-1 Pattern
100 Questions 100 Max Marks +1 Correct -0.333 Wrong 90 Minutes Duration
📚Subject-wise Breakup
Mathematics — 30 Qs General Intelligence — 30 Qs General Awareness — 40 Qs

The NTPC CBT-1 exam has a negative marking of 1/3 mark for every wrong answer. Unanswered questions carry zero marks. Since the exam is conducted across multiple shifts and days, RRB applies percentile-based normalization to ensure fair evaluation among all candidates.

NTPC CBT-1 Posts & Pay Levels

RRB NTPC covers a wide range of non-technical posts in Indian Railways. The CBT-1 exam is common for all posts, and candidates are shortlisted for CBT-2 based on their normalized CBT-1 marks. Here are the major post categories covered under each graduate and undergraduate level.

Graduate Level Posts (Level 5 & 6)

Station Master, Traffic Assistant, Goods Guard, Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Senior Clerk cum Typist, Junior Account Assistant cum Typist, Commercial Apprentice

Undergraduate Level Posts (Level 2 & 3)

Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Trains Clerk, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Clerk cum Typist, Time Keeper, Enquiry cum Reservation Clerk

How NTPC Normalization Works

Since the NTPC CBT-1 exam is held across multiple shifts over several days, each shift has a different question paper. To account for variation in difficulty, the Railway Recruitment Boards apply a percentile-based normalization method approved by the Ministry of Railways.

Step 1: Calculate Percentile in Your Shift

Your percentile = (candidates who scored equal to or less than you in your shift ÷ total candidates in your shift) × 100. This is computed to 5 decimal places for precision.

Step 2: Identify the Base Shift

The shift with the highest average marks is chosen as the base shift, provided it has at least 70% of the mean attendance across shifts. In case of a tie, the shift with the highest individual score or highest attendance is selected.

Step 3: Map to Base Shift Score

Your percentile is mapped to the base shift’s score distribution through linear interpolation. This gives your final normalized marks. If you appeared in an easier shift, your normalized marks will be adjusted downward, and vice versa — ensuring all NTPC candidates are ranked on a level playing field.

Understanding Your NTPC Scorecard

Once you upload your NTPC Response Sheet PDF, the tool generates a detailed scorecard with multiple performance metrics. Here is what each number tells you.

Raw Marks — Your total score calculated as: (correct answers × 1) − (wrong answers × 0.333). For a 100-question NTPC CBT-1 paper, the maximum possible raw score is 100 and the minimum is −33.3.

Percentile Score — Shows what percentage of candidates in your shift scored equal to or less than you. A percentile of 95 means you scored higher than 95% of candidates in your shift.

Normalized Marks — The final score used by RRB for merit ranking. Your percentile is converted to the base shift’s marks using linear interpolation. This is the most important number for determining your NTPC CBT-2 shortlisting.

Predicted Rank — Your estimated position among all NTPC candidates who checked their marks using this tool, with breakdowns by overall, RRB zone, and reservation category. The prediction becomes more accurate as more candidates upload their response sheets.

NTPC CBT-1 Expected Cutoff Range

RRB NTPC cutoff varies by zone, category, and post level. Below is a general expected range based on previous NTPC recruitment cycles. These are indicative normalized marks and may differ for the latest cycle.

UR (Unreserved)
Level 5/6: 55–75 marks Level 2/3: 45–65 marks
OBC / EWS
Level 5/6: 50–70 marks Level 2/3: 40–60 marks
SC / ST
Level 5/6: 40–60 marks Level 2/3: 30–50 marks

Note: Actual cutoffs depend on the number of vacancies, total applicants, and difficulty level of the particular NTPC cycle. Use your normalized marks from the calculator above to estimate where you stand.

NTPC Frequently Asked Questions

What is the RRB NTPC CBT-1 exam pattern?
The RRB NTPC CBT-1 consists of 100 objective-type multiple choice questions worth 100 marks. The exam duration is 90 minutes (120 minutes for eligible PwBD candidates). Questions are divided into three sections: Mathematics (30 questions), General Intelligence & Reasoning (30 questions), and General Awareness (40 questions). There is negative marking of 1/3 mark for each wrong answer.
How is normalization done in NTPC?
RRB uses the percentile-based normalization method for NTPC. First, your percentile is calculated within your shift. Then, a base shift (the one with the highest mean marks and adequate attendance) is selected. Your percentile is mapped to the base shift’s marks distribution using linear interpolation. This ensures candidates from all shifts are compared fairly, regardless of which shift or question paper they received.
Where can I download my NTPC Response Sheet?
Visit the official website of the RRB zone you applied through. Log in with your registration number and date of birth. Navigate to the “Answer Key” or “Response Sheet” section. Download the PDF file — it contains your questions, your selected answers (color-coded green for correct, red for wrong), and the official correct answers.
Will I get separate ranks for Level 5/6 and Level 2/3?
The CBT-1 exam is common for all NTPC post levels. However, the cutoff and shortlisting for CBT-2 is done separately for each post level — Level 5/6 (graduate posts like Station Master, Goods Guard) and Level 2/3 (undergraduate posts like Clerk, Typist). Our tool shows your overall rank among all NTPC candidates who have used the calculator, which helps you estimate your standing for both levels.
How accurate is the predicted rank for NTPC?
The predicted rank is based on all NTPC candidates who upload their response sheets to this tool. As more candidates check their marks, the rank prediction becomes more accurate. While this cannot replicate the official merit list (which includes all candidates), it gives a strong indication of your relative standing among active test-takers.
Is my NTPC response sheet PDF safe to upload?
Yes. Your PDF is processed securely and only the answer data (correct, wrong, unanswered counts) is extracted. We do not store the original PDF file on our servers. Your personal information is used solely for generating your scorecard and ranking within the tool.
What is the selection process after NTPC CBT-1?
Candidates shortlisted on the basis of CBT-1 normalized marks are called for CBT-2. For certain posts like Station Master and Traffic Assistant, there is also a Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT). Posts such as Goods Guard and Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk additionally require a Typing Skill Test. The final merit is prepared based on the combined performance in CBT-1, CBT-2, and applicable skill tests, followed by document verification and medical examination.
Can I also check marks for RRB Group D, ALP, or JE?
Yes. We have dedicated calculators for every RRB exam. Visit our RRB Marks Calculator page to access all exam-specific tools, or use the exam links section below this FAQ to navigate directly to the calculator you need.
